Family raising funds for funeral expenses after woman found dead in boyfriend’s closet

In a gesture of support, a North Texas family took to food sales to assist in a time of need.

Cousins of 27-year-old Corinna Johnson, rallying together as they have since childhood, set up outside Arlington’s Daiquiri Dash on Saturday to sell tacos, brisket, and elote. Their aim was to help cover unexpected funeral expenses.

Reflecting on the tragic circumstances, Anthony Gareau expressed disbelief: “I think the circumstances of what happened are pretty horrendous. I don’t think you can ever prepare for something like this in general.”

Johnson’s body was discovered early Monday morning in a Dallas apartment complex on Wheatland Road, wrapped in bedding and tragically ‘bludgeoned’ to death, according to an arrest affidavit.

Gareau, Johnson’s first cousin, emphasized the family’s determination to raise awareness about the dangers of domestic violence amid their grief.

Omar Lucio, Johnson’s boyfriend, faces charges of her murder after confessing that ‘he had to knock some sense into her.’

Gareau stressed the importance of acknowledging the existence of such situations, highlighting how swiftly tragedy can strike anyone.

Community members, including strangers like Mark Lee, joined the family’s efforts, contributing not only to funeral costs but also to supporting Johnson’s 7-year-old son, who is yet unaware of his mother’s fate.

Despite the immense pain, Gareau expressed a commitment to navigating through the tragedy as best as possible.

Lucio is currently detained on bonds totaling $1.5 million for murder, as well as for an unrelated case involving alleged street racing and a crash, which Johnson was reportedly involved in back in November.

Online court records reveal Lucio’s extensive criminal history dating back to 2007, including assault and rape cases in Houston.
