Houston parents charged in connection to twin baby girls’ death Oct. 2023 death, documents say

Charges have been brought against a man and a woman regarding the tragic death of twin infants in October 2023, as indicated by court records.

Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, face two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury.

Initial reports, covered by ABC13 on October 4, 2023, detailed Houston Police Department patrol officers responding to a residence in the 2100 block of Linden Creek Lane, where they found two infants, identified by relatives as Massail and Mirena Vega, unresponsive.

The children’s father, identified as Vega, discovered them in their crib, not breathing. Despite attempting CPR as instructed by emergency dispatchers, the prematurely born twins did not survive.

During police interviews, Vega described the infants as “fussy” throughout the night before placing them in a bassinet where they fell asleep. The following day, Calderon, the mother, reported seeing the babies but refrained from waking them as she prepared for work.

Upon returning home from dropping Calderon off at work, Vega found the infants unresponsive.

Autopsy results revealed the infants suffered from multiple injuries inflicted by a blunt object, leading to their tragic demise. Additionally, investigators found signs of neglect, as the twins had not received medical check-ups since leaving the hospital. Calderon acknowledged the twins were ill but admitted to not seeking medical attention.

Further inquiry into the matter implicated Calderon and Vega, both of whom were apprehended on April 19 without resistance.

While Calderon’s family insists she was a caring mother, they acknowledge Vega’s abusive behavior towards her. Recent court records indicate Vega’s prior arrest for unlawfully restraining Calderon.

Though Calderon’s relatives do not believe she physically harmed the infants, they assert she should be held responsible for the neglect uncovered by investigators. Reports indicate the twins were malnourished, with some injuries showing signs of being weeks old.
