Southwest Airlines will no longer fly out of Bush Airport and 3 other airports after financial lows

Southwest Airlines will cease operations at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, reverting to solely servicing customers from Hobby Airport. This decision, effective August 4, 2024, follows the airline’s struggle with financial challenges and delays in aircraft deliveries from Boeing.

Facing a $231 million loss in the first quarter, Southwest is swiftly implementing measures to improve its financial performance, including reducing hiring and encouraging employees to take time off.

In addition to financial constraints, Southwest is grappling with Boeing’s slower production, exacerbated by recent safety concerns. This has led to the airline reducing its service to several airports and adjusting its fleet plans.

The airline’s withdrawal from George Bush Intercontinental Airport aims to streamline operations and focus on more profitable routes. Despite this change, Southwest will maintain its presence at Hobby Airport, where it has a strong foothold.

Southwest’s departure from George Bush Intercontinental Airport marks its second exit from the location, having previously ceased operations there in 2005 before returning in 2021.

Affected customers will be notified by Southwest and given the option to fly from Hobby Airport or receive a refund for flights scheduled after August 4.
