Emergency supplies sold ‘Tax Free’ this weekend in Texas

With the constant threat of severe weather looming in Texas this time of year, the state is urging residents to prepare by stocking up on emergency supplies this weekend, made easier by the removal of sales tax on many essential items.

The 2024 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 29.

Here’s a list of eligible items:

For items under $3,000:
– Portable generators

For items under $300:
– Emergency ladders
– Hurricane shutters

For items under $75:
– Axes
– Batteries (AAA, AA, C cell, D cell, 9 volt & 6 volt)
– Nonelectric can openers
– Carbon monoxide detectors
– Coolers and ice chests for food storage (nonelectric)
– Fire extinguishers
– First aid kits
– Fuel containers
– Ground anchor systems or tie-down kits
– Hatchets
– Ice products (reusable and artificial)
– Light sources (candles, flashlights, lanterns)
– Mobile telephone batteries and chargers
– Radios (including two-way and weather band radios)
– Smoke detectors
– Tarps and plastic sheeting

If you’re charged sales tax on these items during the holiday, you can request a refund of the tax from the seller.
