East Fork of San Jacinto River expected to crest, but more rain now on the way

The San Jacinto River is projected to reach a crest of approximately 72 feet on Wednesday afternoon due to increased rainfall upstream from earlier storms this week.

The Weather Team has declared Wednesday and Thursday morning as Weather Alert Days, with the potential for additional heavy rainfall. A storm on Thursday morning may bring gusty winds, hail, and a brief tornado.

Overnight, Harris County Precinct 3 and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office conducted high-water rescues in the Idle Wild area of New Caney.

Sgt. Jeff Mabery of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Dist. 2 reported that high-water vehicles were engaged in numerous rescues throughout the night, primarily of animals. Approximately a dozen people and nearly three dozen animals, including dogs and cats, were rescued upon request.

As of about 3:45 a.m., Precinct 3 stated that the areas of New Caney and Huffman, including Spaulding Road, Casey Road from FM 1485 to the dead end, and the Idle Wild neighborhood, were experiencing high water from the river. FM 1485 is expected to remain impassable for several days.

While evacuations remain voluntary, Harris and Montgomery counties’ emergency officials have alerted residents near the San Jacinto River’s East Fork of the rising water levels.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning for the East Fork near New Caney, affecting Liberty, Harris, and Montgomery counties. Emergency officials have identified five neighborhoods expected to be impacted: Idle Glen Subdivision, Northwood Country Estates, River Terrace, Cypress Point, and the Kingwood area.

Harris County has designated the Leon Grayson/Baldree Community Center at 13828 Corpus Christi St. in Houston as a shelter. Residents witnessing high water near their homes are advised not to attempt driving to the shelter but instead to call 911 for assistance from first responders.

The shelter will provide cots, blankets, food, and water and will also accept crated pets.
