Here’s where to find help out of an abusive relationship with the Houston Area Women’s Center

In Houston, Texas, leaving a situation of domestic abuse can pose significant risks, but the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) emphasizes that it can be achieved safely and successfully.

The demand for HAWC support services has surged in the Houston area since the onset of the pandemic, as many individuals have been confined to their homes for extended periods.

“Since the pandemic, our call volume has doubled, and the need for shelter has tripled,” stated Leticia Manzano of HAWC.

Individuals seeking assistance in escaping domestic violence can contact the Houston Area Women’s Center 24/7 hotline at 713-528-2121 or AVDA at 713-224-9911. Online chat support is also available. Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals can call 713-528-3625 for assistance.

Trained counselors will handle calls with confidentiality and respect the survivor’s wishes. Concerns regarding immigration status should not deter individuals from seeking help.

HAWC offers emergency shelter at a Houston location and collaborates with shelters in Montgomery, Galveston, and Brazoria counties to ensure survivors have access to safe havens.

It’s crucial for survivors to understand that the abuse they endure is not their fault, and HAWC has witnessed numerous success stories of individuals, regardless of gender, breaking free from abusive environments.
