On the first anniversary of the tragic attack at the Allen Premium Outlets that claimed the lives of eight individuals on May 6, 2023, a permanent monument memorializing the victims was unveiled.
Among those who tragically lost their lives in the attack were three children, including two sisters and a young boy, who perished alongside his parents. Additionally, three adults, including a mall security guard who heroically assisted shoppers to safety, were among the casualties. Seven others sustained injuries during the shooting.
Allen Mayor Baine Brooks, reflecting on the solemn occasion, expressed the profound impact of the tragedy on the city, remarking, “It was very difficult to watch. I never imagined that day would come in this city, the city of Allen. Allen has changed. We know that bad people do bad things in good places.”
As the city and its residents continue to mourn and heal, first responders remain steadfast in their commitment to prevent such a tragedy from recurring.
“Just because it’s never happened in the same place twice doesn’t mean that it can’t or that it won’t,” emphasized Lt. Kris Wirstrom of the Allen Police Department. “We don’t have the luxury of taking a break. We have to be ready.”
On Monday afternoon, at 3:36 p.m., Allen will observe a citywide moment of silence, inviting everyone affected by the loss to participate, regardless of their location.
