Dallas Stars community initiatives reaching kids in Mexico City

When the Dallas Stars advance to the postseason, Al Montoya believes it’s a win for everyone, especially the community.

As the first Cuban-American to play in the NHL and now serving as the Dallas Stars Vice President of Cultural Growth and Strategy, Montoya is dedicated to expanding the reach of the Stars and the sport of hockey within underrepresented communities, both locally and internationally.

“We recently returned from a trip to Mexico City, and we’ll be heading back soon,” Montoya stated. “For us, it’s a significant opportunity to showcase our initiatives and spread our message.”

That message emphasizes that hockey is a sport for all. Their goal is to convey this message to children who might not otherwise have the chance to experience the game.

“We’ve launched a Learn to Play program, a six-week initiative for kids aged four to ten in Mexico City,” Montoya explained. “We kicked it off in April, and they’ll complete the program in May. It’s an opportunity for them to be introduced to the game we’re so passionate about and give them the chance to participate.”

The program involves 50 children and is conducted in partnership with the National Hockey League.

On a local level, Montoya has collaborated with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas for the free Future Stars program, which introduces hockey to schools and facilities across the region. Since its inception in 2023, the Future Stars initiative has expanded from two locations to nine in 2024. These programs receive support and equipment to host weekly youth hockey activities in underserved communities.

Moreover, the Dallas Stars emphasize that the Stanley Cup Playoffs significantly enhance fan engagement and community outreach. The heightened attention and awareness have bolstered fundraising efforts through the 50/50 raffle at home games. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the jackpot benefit the Dallas Stars Foundation, which supports the youth hockey program, community engagement initiatives, and health and education programs for North Texans.

Currently, the Dallas Stars are competing in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Colorado Avalanche.
