One of the 14 victims in Austin shooting reported dead; suspect in custody is juvenile

One of the 14 people who were injured in the shooting on Austin’s Sixth Street over the weekend has died, the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE reported Sunday.

Austin police identified the victim as 25-year-old Douglas John Kantor. Kantor had been visiting Austin from New York, American-Statesman reporter Tony Plohetski said, citing “multiple officials.”

In a statement to KXAN, Kantor’s family said he was looking forward to marrying his high school sweetheart and starting a family.

Thirteen more people were injured in the shooting, which happened about 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Austin’s bustling Sixth Street. Authorities said Saturday that one suspect was in custody while another remained at large.

The jailed suspect is a juvenile, the Statesman reported. Charges have not been announced.

Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon said investigators think the shooting began as a dispute between two parties.

Witnesses described a panicked scene as gunfire rang out on the street, which is a popular nightlife destination.
