Garland ISD shuts down elementary school amid COVID-19 surge

The Garland Health Department “issued a 14-day closure order” to Handley Elementary School on Thursday as coronavirus cases continue to spread throughout the school district.

“This closure was ordered due to the number of unconnected cases of COVID-19 on campus,” Handley Elementary.

The school described “unconnected cases” as those that “do not appear to be connected to one another,” adding that asymptomatic cases could be helping spread the illness throughout the student body and among staff members.

From Friday through Dec. 4, Handley Elementary will conduct its courses via online learning programs. The campus is slated to reopen for face-to-face learning on Monday, Dec. 7.

As of Thursday, Garland ISD has reported eight coronavirus cases at Handley Elementary on its online dashboard. Of that total, five staff members and one student are still considered active cases.

Across the district, there have been at least 645 students who have tested positive for the virus, as well as 211 staff members and 33 employees at administrative facilities.

According to Garland ISD’s tally, active cases district-wide include 153 students, 66 staff members and 16 administrative facility employees.
