Woman surrenders after 2 hour standoff with HPD that sent bullets flying in west Houston, police say

Thursday morning brought chaos to West Houston at the intersection of Westheimer and Lazy Hollow as neighbors sought shelter during a violent incident.

Following an hours-long standoff with law enforcement, a 34-year-old woman is now under arrest.

Shumoos Al Jameel recounted how she reacted when she heard knocking at her door around 12:30 a.m., only to be followed by gunshots moments later. Al Jameel, terrified for her children’s safety, immediately called 911 and sought refuge with her family.

According to Al Jameel, the woman involved was knocking on multiple doors in the area, with one neighbor recounting that she requested money and resorted to gunfire when denied.

Al Jameel expressed her fear and frustration, questioning the delay in police response as the situation unfolded.

Houston police reported that a 19-year-old bystander suffered a graze wound from a bullet during the incident.

Upon police arrival, the alleged shooter retreated into her apartment and refused to cooperate, barricading herself inside with her boyfriend and three children aged between 8 and 11.

After a tense two-hour standoff, the woman, identified as 34-year-old Reyna Rocha, peacefully surrendered to authorities. She now faces charges of aggravated assault.

Al Jameel, originally from Iraq and a survivor of war, described the incident as one of the scariest experiences she’s faced, emphasizing the violation of the sense of security that one expects within their own home.
