Pedestrian struck, killed in crash with off-duty Dallas police officer

An off-duty Dallas police officer driving home from work Sunday night fatally struck a pedestrian in North Dallas, authorities said.

Officers and Dallas Fire-Rescue officials were called about 10 p.m. to the scene of the crash in the 8100 block of the LBJ Freeway service road.

The off-duty officer was going west on the service road when someone stepped into the street in front of his vehicle, police said. The officer struck the pedestrian, who died at the scene.

Police did not release the name of the victim or the officer. The officer, who was driving a personal vehicle, was not hurt, police said. The Dallas County medical examiner’s office said the victim’s identity was unknown.

Police spokesman Sgt. Warren Mitchell said in an email just after midnight that officers with the traffic unit were working to process the scene of the crash.
