Ozone remains unhealthy Friday, rain returns next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Friday brings more sunshine and low humidity, but the air quality could still turn unhealthy during the afternoon.

When abundant sunshine, light winds, and warm air occur in tandem over Houston, it often leads to high levels of ozone pollution. We are under an Ozone Pollution Watch for Friday. Ragweed pollen and mold spore counts also remain high.

Temperatures will start off in the mid 60s then warm to near 90 in the afternoon.

What’s the outlook for the weekend?
A stronger Gulf breeze will push up the humidity levels Saturday and especially Sunday. You’ll feel the biggest difference in the humidity, which will keep low temperatures closer to 70. Highs will still top out in the upper 80s. By Sunday there will be enough moisture for a 20% chance of a passing shower.

What are the rain chances for next week?
A weak front will approach us Monday to bring a 40% chance of scattered downpours. It doesn’t actually make it to Houston, so we will remain in the sticky air until another weak front approaches on Wednesday and Thursday. This front will combine with tropical moisture from a Pacific storm and could bring widely scattered downpours. At this time our rain chance is at 40% for Thursday and Friday, and those chances could go up.

Is there anything of concern in the tropics?

At this time, no. Texas is normally done with hurricane season by mid October as the steering currents shift and push fronts into the state instead of tropical weather systems. We will be monitoring the Pacific for storms and hurricanes that can enhance the moisture over Texas. You can get a full overview of the tropics on our tropical update page.
