The new Superintendent, Smith, commences his term at FBISD, while the reason for the change in Whitbeck remains unknown

New Superintendent Marc Smith commenced his term on Jan. 22; however, Fort Bend ISD’s board has not disclosed the reason for the change in leadership at the district.

Former Superintendent Christie Whitbeck stated in December that she was presented with an ultimatum by the board to retire with severance pay or face dismissal.

This decision came despite her active involvement in campaigning for the November voter-approval tax rate election (VATRE) and receiving a two-year contract extension and a raise in July. The FBISD board approved Whitbeck’s retirement and a severance package of $491,000, funded by property taxes, during their meeting on Dec. 4.

Smith, who previously served as an executive principal and assistant superintendent in FBISD from 2006-2012, was appointed as Whitbeck’s replacement by the board on Jan. 8. While the board declined to comment on the reasons behind Whitbeck’s retirement and the swift hiring of Smith, they emphasized their commitment to moving the district forward under Smith’s leadership. The district’s next board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26.
