USPS stops delivering to Northshore apartment complex after mailboxes left unsecured for months

Residents of an apartment complex in east Houston are expressing frustration over a mail delivery hiatus lasting over a month, citing issues with unsecured mailboxes.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) confirmed the cessation of mail delivery to the Falls of Birchbrook apartments due to concerns regarding the inadequate security of the mailboxes. Eyewitness News observed instances of mailbox doors being bent, locks missing, and a mailroom door absent.

Tenant Rita Robledo voiced her discontent, highlighting the unfairness of being charged late fees for bills she never received amidst the disrupted mail service.

Another tenant, Daniel Espinoza, recalled noticing the absence of mail since early February, perplexed by the failure to receive expected bills.

Concerns were raised regarding the lack of communication from management regarding the mail service interruption. Despite inquiries, the complex management refrained from providing a timeline for repairs.

A communication from a letter carrier, provided by a tenant, revealed that USPS has been inquiring about repairs since mid-February.

Attorney Ernie Garcia emphasized tenants’ entitlement to functional mailboxes, advising them to formally notify landlords of the issue and allowing sufficient time for rectification before considering legal action.

Currently, mail is being redirected to the leasing office, necessitating residents to sort through it themselves, raising concerns about potential mail tampering.

Residents underscored the urgency of addressing the situation, as dissatisfaction with the living conditions has prompted some to contemplate relocating.
