Students build Lego models of sun, earth, and moon to learn about the solar eclipse

Angela Gier’s fifth-grade science class at Maple Lawn Elementary in Dallas ISD has embarked on an engaging journey to explore the upcoming eclipse.

Known for their innovative projects, Gier’s class utilized Legos to construct a model depicting the eclipse phenomenon.

“The earth is rotating around the sun, then the moon comes in front of the earth and blocks the sun,” explained student Rosa Abdullah, highlighting the intricate process involved in creating their Lego model.

This hands-on activity not only reinforces scientific concepts but also fosters teamwork and problem-solving skills among the students. By integrating engineering principles with scientific knowledge, the students are gaining a deeper understanding of celestial events.

For instance, student JJ demonstrated how he incorporated motors to simulate the moon’s rotation around the Earth, showcasing the practical application of their learning.

Gier emphasized the significance of tangible activities like Lego building in enhancing students’ comprehension. “It does help immensely because it’s a tangible activity. And they can manipulate the bricks, they can also problem solve, collaborate with each other, and get ideas from each other,” she explained.

Teeara Walker emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration fostered by such activities. “It helps people communicate better with people as they build. When you get to know them. And when you don’t know. It can help to communicate,” she said.

With their Lego model as a visual aid, the students are eagerly preparing for the eclipse. They understand the importance of safety measures, with JJ Gallegos even planning to secure his eclipse glasses with tape to ensure proper protection.

Through hands-on learning experiences like these, Gier’s class is not only expanding their scientific knowledge but also nurturing essential skills for future success.
