Advocates rally to end pregnancy-related deaths in America during Black Maternal Health Week

In the United States, hundreds of individuals lose their lives annually during pregnancy or in the year following childbirth. Each pregnancy-related death is a tragedy, especially considering that over 80% of these fatalities are preventable. However, the issue is particularly alarming for women of color, as the problem continues to worsen.

According to Monique Shaw of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this crisis is exacerbated by the nation’s failure to provide comprehensive and affordable healthcare coverage for all. Shaw identifies it as a manifestation of the medical racism, bias, and inadequate care predominantly experienced by Black Americans.

In response to this crisis, Black women are advocating for policies and practices aimed at ensuring a safe and healthy birthing experience for everyone. These efforts include expanding health insurance coverage and implementing effective policies and programs to enhance maternal health outcomes, particularly for women of color.
