Police chief orders internal investigation over 911 call after Dallas shooting leaves 1 dead, 8 injured at party

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia announced on Sunday that he has initiated an internal investigation to assess whether officers could have handled the circumstances of a call differently following a shooting incident that resulted in eight injuries and one fatality.

The Dallas Police Department initially responded to a call around 11:10 p.m. reporting gunfire at a party located in the 4500 block of Collins Avenue.

According to spokesperson Kristin Lowman, a preliminary investigation revealed that a large party had spilled into the street, and the gunfire had ceased by the time law enforcement arrived.

“We remained in the area, patrolling, and monitoring the crowd,” Lowman stated.

Lowman reported that at approximately 1:35 a.m., officers nearby heard shots fired.

The gunfire struck seven women and two men, all of whom were transported to local hospitals by Dallas Fire Rescue and private vehicles, as per the report.

Coriesha Bradford, 21, passed away at the hospital, while the other eight adults sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Tyresha Jordan, Bradford’s cousin, expressed grief over the loss, emphasizing that Bradford should have been at work on Sunday. Instead, the family received an urgent call to rush to Baylor Hospital.

“She did not have to go the way she did,” Jordan lamented. “It’s senseless. Y’all broke our family. Everybody is so hurt right now.”

Dallas detectives currently do not have a suspect description but do not believe the incident was a random act.

Bradford’s family raised concerns about why the police did not disperse the party earlier.

“A bunch of people at 1:00 in the morning,” questioned Bradford’s aunt, Patrice Price. “Cops should’ve been making everyone leave.”

In a statement released late Sunday afternoon, Chief Garcia acknowledged his intention to delve further into the events leading up to the shooting.

“While the preliminary investigation determined officers who responded did not observe criminal activity among the people in the area at the time, this event ultimately led to tragic consequences,” Garcia stated.

The preliminary investigation indicated that one individual initiated gunfire within the crowd, prompting others to discharge their firearms. Dallas Police affirm that the investigation is ongoing, and there is currently no suspect description.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Detective Phillip Wheeler at 214-671-3686 or via email at Phillip.wheeler@dallaspolice.gov.
