Fort Worth Police address street racing concerns after recent takeovers, arrests

The video captures the chaos that erupted at a bustling intersection near residential areas and businesses in South Fort Worth on Sunday night.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., a crowd of dozens blocked traffic, using the intersection of Berry Street and Hemphill Street as a venue for stunts and reckless driving.

Sharon Smith, a resident in the area for two months, recounted the disturbing scene, expressing concern about the potential for accidents. Despite multiple calls to 911, such events have persisted.

Fort Worth Police PIO Buddy Calzada emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated in the city. He noted an increase in reports of street takeovers and racing incidents, particularly between spring break and the onset of summer.

Law enforcement has prioritized enforcement against reckless driving, bolstered by legislation passed last year to impose stricter penalties on offenders. Calzada highlighted the collaborative efforts of various police units, including the gang unit and directed response unit, in addressing the issue.

Video footage captured moments before police intervention showed a witness observing a silver SUV driving into the crowd before gunshots were fired. Five individuals were subsequently arrested, two for reckless driving and three for participating as spectators.

Calzada issued a stern warning to those engaging in illegal street racing and reckless behavior, asserting that swift arrest awaits offenders.

However, addressing these challenges requires community involvement, with authorities urging residents to report any suspicious activity and provide evidence, such as videos, to facilitate the apprehension of dangerous individuals.

The police department remains committed to ensuring public safety and relies on the cooperation of residents in addressing such incidents effectively.
