Rally, security upgrades one week after shooting at Wilmer Hutchins

Exactly one week after a shooting incident at Wilmer Hutchins High School, officials have implemented changes aimed at enhancing student safety. This announcement was made during a student-led rally against gun violence called “Eagles Blackout Against Gun Violence,” where performances and discussions took place.

The atmosphere at the event was positive, with students showcasing talents from various school activities. However, amidst the positivity, students also voiced concerns about the recent shooting incident and its impact on the school community.

To bolster safety measures, school officials disclosed that several upgrades have been implemented over the past week. These include mandating clear backpacks for all students, conducting more thorough bag checks, and ensuring that all students pass through functional metal detectors. Additionally, security measures have been enhanced to address any alerts from the metal detectors.

Students have acknowledged the changes, noting that the intake process is now longer but the bag checking process is more rigorous.

Principal Shadaria Foster publicly apologized to the student body for the recent traumatic events and emphasized the school’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all students.

Meanwhile, questions remain about how the firearm was brought onto campus. DISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, with efforts focused on understanding the circumstances leading up to the altercation between two students.

Elizalde emphasized the importance of communication and reiterated the district’s commitment to prioritizing student and staff safety. Increased support teams and police presence have been implemented at Wilmer Hutchins High School to provide additional security.

Following the rally, a planned walkout allowed students to express their thoughts on gun violence and school safety.
