50-year-old Harris Co. deputy dies when vehicle hits him on Grand Parkway, sheriff’s office says

A Harris County sheriff’s deputy tragically lost his life after being struck and killed on the Grand Parkway while responding to a crash, as confirmed by authorities.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez conveyed that the deputy was aiding at the crash site along Highway 99 and Cumberland when the incident occurred. The deputy sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Gonzalez expressed condolences, stating, “It is a sad day in Harris County as we mourn the loss of a deputy who died in the line of duty.” He extended sympathies to the deputy’s family and colleagues, recognizing their commitment to ensuring the safety of the county.

The deputy was identified as 50-year-old John H. Coddou, who had been serving with HCSO since 2003.

During the commissioner’s court session, Harris County Judge Hidalgo and Commissioner Adrian Garcia requested a moment of silence to honor the fallen deputy.

Following the crash, the highway was temporarily closed in both directions but has since been reopened.
