Near record heat Monday, monitoring tropical low in the Gulf

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Sunday brought our hottest weather so far in 2021. Hobby Airport tied a record high of 100-degrees. Bush Airport is the official record-keeping thermometer for Houston, and it topped out at 99, just two degree shy of the record 101 from 1911.

Similar weather is on the way for Monday. Temperatures will start off rather balmy around 80, then soar to near 100 in the afternoon. A few downpours with lightning and gusty winds are possible in the late afternoon and early evening, but many will stay dry. Monday’s record high is 102 from 1998. A dangerous mix of heat and humidity could once again send the “feels like” heat index to near 110-degrees, which would trigger another Heat Advisory. Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon if possible.

How long will this near-record heat stick around?
Monday and Tuesday will be our hottest days of the week due to light and variable winds. Your best hope for cooler temps both days will be if you get one of the few downpours that pops up in the late afternoon and early evening hours. By Wednesday, the Gulf breeze will start to kick up again, which should keep us from reaching the upper 90s. It will still be hot, and with the humidity, heat index values will easily top 100-105 all week long.

What about that low in the Gulf? Could it bring us rain?
Yes, it is possible the low pressure in the southwest Gulf could bring us rain sometime during Father’s Day weekend, but it is still too early to know what kind of impacts we’ll get here. You can stay aware and informed on what’s happening in the tropics by visiting abc13.com/tropicalupdate.
