Carol Donovan, Dallas County Democratic leader, resigning

Dallas County Democratic chairwoman Carol Donovan is leaving her post later this year after a replacement is selected among party leaders.

Donovan led the party for six years.

In a statement, she said the COVID-19 related death of her mother earlier this year forced her to reflect on her priorities.

“After the 2020 election, I was energized and ready to run for re-election in 2022. However, the death of my mother of COVID-19 in January 2021 helped me focus on the finiteness of life and the limited time we all have to cherish what is most important to us,” she said.

The 2020 election saw the largest turnout in Dallas County’s history with nearly 1 million people voting. Since 2006, the Democratic party has had a strong long on the state’s second-largest county.

“Thanks to a great staff, strong leadership (including our Precinct Chairs and other elected officials), and the effective work we have done together, I know I am leaving DCDP in a good position,” said Donovan.

In Texas, party leaders are elected during primary elections. However, in the case of vacancy, precinct chairs may elect a new leader. The vote will be June 2

Donovan was first appointed this way to complete the unexpired term of the late Chairwoman Darlene Ewing.
