Klein ISD Police Department prepares officers with EMT training

Klein ISD Police Department is taking an extra step to protect students and staff by sending two supervisors to receive emergency medical technician training, becoming one of the first Houston area police departments to do so.

Klein ISD Police sergeants Cliff Maduzia and Jimmy Barr were sent to train with Cypress Creek EMS to learn the same skills and techniques EMT professionals use, including giving medical care, administering CPR and oxygen, and applying splints. Norm Uhl, public information officer with CCEMS, said the sergeants will finish training in December.

David Kimberly, chief of police for Klein ISD PD, said both Barr and Maduzia were previously EMTs and Maduzia worked for CCEMS. He said once all six first-line supervisors have been trained other officers will be sent for training, with officers who were previously EMTs possibly taking priority.

“Each sergeant is assigned a specific feeder pattern, so there’s a sergeant per high school and they cover everything,” Kimberly said. “So, their response time to the outliers is a lot faster.”

Kimberly said the training will not replace the need for nurses on campuses, but will improve the ability of the officers to aid in situations all over the district. After completing training, Barr and Manduzia will receive “go bags” with EMT equipment.
